I went with my daughter Sarah and three of her friends to the Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival<\/strong>, the summer event that transforms Franklin Square into a glowing garden filled with enormous illuminated animals, flowers, dragons, music, water, food, and live performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I had seen photographs from previous years, but there are some things photographs simply cannot capture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And perhaps that is why I was especially happy to experience it with four teenagers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n While I was looking at the lights and giant animals, they were finding their own references. At one point, one of the girls said that some of the installations reminded her of the illuminated garden in Coraline<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And I thought: yes. Exactly that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There was something cinematic and dreamlike about it, like a tiny secret world had appeared in the middle of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Lantern Festival is a traditional Chinese celebration with roots going back roughly 2,000 years. It takes place at the end of the Lunar New Year celebrations and has traditionally been associated with lanterns, gatherings, food, and community celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Philadelphia festival has a much more recent history. The Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival at Franklin Square began in 2016<\/strong> and has become one of the city’s favorite summer traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I love that combination: an ancient tradition making its way into a city with so much of its own history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And every year, the festival changes.<\/p>\n\n\n In 2026, the displays celebrate the Year of the Horse<\/strong>, with additional elements inspired by animals, flowers, Philadelphia, the World Cup, and the city’s 250th anniversary celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 2026 is also the Year of the Fire Horse<\/strong>, traditionally associated with energy, passion, freedom, and movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps that explains all the animals wandering through Franklin Square this year: elephants, leopards, birds, horses, giant flowers, fantastic creatures\u2014and a very large dragon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For current dates, tickets, accessibility information, and festival updates, visit the official Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n We live outside Philadelphia, so I didn’t want the festival to be just a couple of hours in the evening. We turned it into a little day trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We arrived shortly after noon and started at Reading Terminal Market<\/strong>, one of my favorite places to take a group when everyone wants something different to eat. With so many choices under one roof, it’s an easy way to start a Philadelphia adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Reading Terminal Market \u2014 Official Website<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n After lunch, we walked toward Franklin Square along Market Street<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And because I was with four teenagers, of course there had to be a shopping stop.<\/p>\n\n\n At 701 Market Street we came across the huge Five Below<\/strong> in Market East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And yes, we went inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because apparently you cannot walk past a giant Five Below with four teenagers and expect everyone to simply continue toward a historical landmark. \ud83d\ude02<\/p>\n\n\n\n The store is packed with tech accessories, candy, beauty products, room d\u00e9cor, games, toys, clothing, sports items, and all kinds of little discoveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It’s exactly the kind of place where a teenager can say, \u201cLook at this!\u201d every twelve seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The official location is at 701 Market Street, making it an easy stop if you’re doing this walk with kids or teens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Five Below \u2014 701 Market Street<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n Eventually, we managed to leave and continued walking toward Franklin Square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I love doing this in Philadelphia. I don’t always want every stop to feel like a separate activity on a carefully planned itinerary. Sometimes the walk itself is part of the adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And when we reached Franklin Square, there was still daylight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That turned out to be perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n For the 2026 season, Franklin Square is open during the day before closing at 5 p.m. to prepare for the evening festival, which begins at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We arrived just before opening, which gave us the chance to see the lanterns in natural light and then watch the entire place transform as the sun went down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During the day, you can appreciate the details of the structures\u2014the shapes, fabrics, colors, patterns, and craftsmanship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then the lights come on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same sculptures begin glowing from within, and Franklin Square becomes an entirely different garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The 2026 festival features all-new illuminated displays inspired by animals, flowers, and Philadelphia, with more than 1,100 individual lantern creations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Walking among them really does feel like stepping into a story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And that’s when I completely understood the Coraline<\/em> comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There was something about it that felt like a secret garden.<\/p>\n\n\n One of this year’s new installations is inspired by the rainforest landscapes of Southeast Asia, with elephants, leopards, birds, enormous flowers, and other animals creating a glowing tropical landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And then there is the dragon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A massive green dragon stretching 164 feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is impossible to miss and, naturally, one of those things everyone wants to photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n The festival also features three live stage performances every night<\/strong>, including traditional Chinese and acrobatic performances such as Face-Changing, Table Foot Juggling, Hat and Sticks Juggling, Head Balancing, and Spacewalking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We watched several.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the performers did the famous Face-Changing<\/strong> performance, a Sichuan opera tradition in which brightly colored masks change almost instantaneously through incredibly precise movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then came several acrobatic performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One that especially caught my attention involved a performer moving around a slowly rotating vertical structure. His movements were so controlled and slow that he almost seemed to be floating through space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The schedule can vary, so I recommend checking the official program before your visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Official Festival Details & Entertainment Schedule<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n Franklin Square is one of William Penn’s five original squares and covers seven acres in Philadelphia’s Historic District. At its center is the historic Rendell Family Fountain, originally built in 1838.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During the festival, the fountain becomes part of a synchronized water, light, and music show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After walking through so many glowing installations, sitting down for a few minutes and watching the water is a lovely pause in the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The 2026 Fountain Show even includes music connected to Philadelphia, including Elton John’s \u201cPhiladelphia Freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Franklin Square \u2014 Official Visitor Information<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n There are plenty of food and drink options inside the festival, including Chinese and Asian-inspired food as well as familiar Philadelphia favorites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The 2026 food lineup includes Chickie’s & Pete’s, Humpty’s Dumplings, Oishii, Sang Kee, and SquareBurger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We had already eaten at Reading Terminal Market, so we weren’t looking for another full meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But of course, we had to try something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We ended up getting the Original Cake Shake<\/strong>, one of the traditional treats available at Franklin Square. It’s a thick vanilla shake made with a Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpet and caramel sauce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because apparently walking through a magical garden filled with giant glowing animals wasn’t enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We also needed cake in a cup. \ud83d\ude02<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was perfect for continuing our walk through the festival without stopping for another full meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And if you’re going with teenagers, I recommend leaving room for dessert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Absolutely not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I think it works for children, teenagers, adults, couples, groups of friends, grandparents, and pretty much anyone who enjoys beautiful things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n My group was four teenagers, and they had a great time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As children grow, the kinds of outings they enjoy with us change. Everything doesn’t have to be designed as a children’s activity for a family outing to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes you just need to find a place where everyone can experience something beautiful from their own perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The girls took photographs, talked, laughed, noticed things I hadn’t noticed, and wandered around together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I watched the lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And, of course, I watched them too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is a strange and beautiful part of motherhood that happens when your children begin growing into their own people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The little ones you once held by the hand are suddenly walking a few steps ahead, talking among themselves, laughing, making plans, and creating memories that belong to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And you’re there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Walking behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Remembering.<\/p>\n\n\n I’m going to say this because I thought about it while I was there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This would make a really lovely date night.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n There are lights, music, water, gardens, food, places to walk, and enough to look at that the conversation doesn’t have to carry the entire evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You could arrive in Philadelphia early, eat at Reading Terminal Market, walk through Old City, explore the historic area, and end the evening at Franklin Square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Or simply meet there around sunset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sit near the fountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Walk slowly through the lanterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Share a Cake Shake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Take a few photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Watch the lights come on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is something naturally romantic about walking through a garden filled with glowing little worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And I’ll admit something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It made me a little nostalgic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There were moments when I thought about other times in my life, other versions of my family, and all those years when my children were little and almost any outing could become a family adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now my children are older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe that’s why these evenings feel different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There was a little nostalgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then I kept walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The girls were happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The city was glowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And there was a giant dragon in front of me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes you just have to let the present be beautiful when it shows up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For the 2026 season, general admission is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Friday, Saturday, and Sunday require timed-entry tickets.
