A recap of A Night of Nightmares, my evening as a Nightmare Insider, with my favorites and a practical guide for your visit
Disclosure: I was invited by Six Flags Great Adventure to A Night of Nightmares, their event for media and content creators. I received park tickets and a welcome gift. All opinions are my own.
My badge read Fright Fest Media Night 2026 Nightmare Insider, and I’ll admit that seeing it hanging around my neck put a smile on my face that didn’t leave all night. I have never felt so important about getting scared.
It was Friday, September 25, and we had arrived at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey. This time the invitation came in my name: Six Flags invited me to A Night of Nightmares, their event for media and content creators, to get an up-close look at everything Fright Fest 2026 had up its sleeve.
Of course, I wasn’t going alone. I brought my official adventure team: my kids, veterans at tagging along with Mom whenever a Six Flags invitation shows up. They know the routine by now: smile for the photo, carry whatever needs carrying and, when the moment comes, hide behind me, even if they swear later it was the other way around.
A Special Welcome
The day started with the kind of details that make you feel expected. At check-in, we received a guest bag with our tickets and the event materials. Among the souvenirs was a pin that combined Fright Fest with Bakunawa, a combination so adorable that it ended up, no debate, in my collection.
We arrived before everything began, which gave us time to feel the park transforming around us. The event took place in one of the park’s pavilions, steps away from Final Destination™: Death’s Playground, one of the season’s new experiences. There was live music, activities designed for those of us covering the Halloween season, and some snacks that were absolutely delicious. We also got information about what’s new at Fright Fest 2026 and everything the park had planned.
But the best part was happening outside.
The fountain showed off its enormous Jack-o’-lantern, and the water looked red under the lights, as if someone had decided that regular water was no longer up to the occasion. Fog crept between the different areas of the park, suspenseful music followed our every step and, every now and then, a scare actor popped out of nowhere to remind us of the basic rule of Fright Fest: stay alert, even when you’re just walking to the next ride. Even the paths between attractions were part of the experience.
And the sky was cooperating. It was overcast, a storm was in the forecast and the wind blew in bursts, whistling around the park. The weather seemed to have read the script and decided to add its own touch of mystery and playful scares.
I was thrilled. This is my favorite time of year, and I got to experience it from the inside.
The Mission Begins
When the event portion wrapped up, our real job as Nightmare Insiders began.
Fright Fest Presented by SNICKERS® opened on September 18 and runs select nights through November 1. It features haunted mazes, scare zones, live entertainment and rides that keep running after the sun goes down. This year brings four new haunted mazes, led by JASON: Blood Reign and Final Destination: Death’s Playground, joined by two original attractions, Twisted Holidays and Deadwood Cabin. Fan favorites like The Conjuring Universe™ and Army of the Dead® return as well.
We decided to do things the complete way, so we went through every maze of the night. Yes, every single one. My legs are still reminding me.
The New Nightmares of 2026
JASON: Blood Reign. Jason Voorhees arrives at Fright Fest inspired by the Friday the 13th universe, and he’s one of the biggest additions of the year. You walk in knowing perfectly well that it’s a production, that the characters are actors and that none of it is real. And still, your body has other plans: at some point my brain said “calm down” and my legs said “run.” The body always wins.
Final Destination: Death’s Playground. This one felt special because the media event took place practically next door. The concept plays with the idea that made the franchise famous: a chain of accidents can start with something completely ordinary and end somewhere much less pleasant. These experiences leave a lasting side effect, because for a good while afterward you look at the most innocent objects with deep suspicion.
Twisted Holidays. An original attraction that takes the calendar of year-end celebrations and turns it into a nightmare. I love the concept, because there’s something delightful about seeing the happiest holidays of the year with a sinister twist. And yes, it’s also a hint of what’s coming: Christmas is already on our radar, but I’ll tell you about that at the end.
Deadwood Cabin. Another original attraction and one of the ones I enjoyed most, which I’ll tell you about in a moment.
My Top Four
Out of all the mazes, four stayed with me: Asylum, Army of the Dead, Deadwood Cabin and The Witch’s Reflection. Each one earned its spot for a different reason.
Asylum. The story takes us to an asylum where the inmates have taken over, and the walkthrough makes you feel like you’re going deeper and deeper into a place where something went terribly wrong. I loved the atmosphere and that tension of walking along, trying to guess where the next scare will come from. Sometimes you see it coming. Sometimes you don’t. And sometimes you convince yourself the scare is over and keep walking, completely relaxed.
Well. No.
Army of the Dead™. Here the mood changes completely: a Las Vegas overrun by zombies, with lights, casino-inspired spaces and the undead appearing at the least convenient moment. It’s so cinematic that for a few minutes you forget you’re in an attraction and let yourself get swept up in the story.
Deadwood Cabin. Woods, an isolated cabin and a family of killers who would prefer that you keep your distance. Classic horror, executed with gusto. And going through it with my kids adds an irreplaceable ingredient: we all react differently. Someone spots something before everyone else, someone screams and then comes the inevitable debate over who got the most scared. It’s already a family tradition.
The Witch’s Reflection. The mirror maze, and the one that stuck in my head the most because it plays directly with perception. The reflections multiply the space, and you have to pay attention to understand what you’re seeing and which way to go. There were moments when I had to look twice, and others when I preferred not to.
The Ones That Just Missed the Top Four
Missing my top four doesn’t mean they aren’t worth it. The Conjuring Universe™ has the kind of tension where everyone wants to be in the middle of the group and nobody wants to be last in line. In the rest of the mazes there were scares I didn’t see coming, nervous laughter and moments when walking fast seemed like an excellent strategy. The truth is that every maze has its own personality, which is why it’s worth walking through all of them if you have the energy.
After the Mazes: Shows, Rides and a Night That Didn’t Want to End
When we came out of the last maze, the night still had plenty left in the tank. We watched a few shows and hopped on several rides, because one of the things we love most about Six Flags is that mix: you go from a haunted maze to a roller coaster and, minutes later, run into a scare zone. The rhythm keeps changing, and you never know what’s coming next.
And here’s something funny: after so many scares, a roller coaster feels almost like a break. Between screams, laughter and the eternal question of who had screamed the loudest, the night flew by.
Fright Fest takes over the entire park. Besides the mazes, there are scare zones, where characters and atmosphere spill out of the mazes and take over different areas, plus a live entertainment lineup that includes the return of the legendary Dead Man’s Party and, every night, Awakening, Blade Drummers and Unleashed.
And The Bloody Fountain, with its Jack-o’-lantern over the red water, gained even more presence once night fully settled in and the lights changed the look of the place.
The funny thing is that all of this happened before the big storm of that weekend rolled into New Jersey. We had the wind, the heavy sky and that feeling that something was approaching, but we got to enjoy the whole night. It was like watching a movie in which the weather was a character too.
The Harvest Moon
There’s a detail that made me smile when I thought about it afterward: our visit fell right on the weekend of the Harvest Moon. The full moon was on September 26, the very next day.
Think about it: Halloween in the air, fog, suspenseful music, wind, cloudy skies and a storm approaching, with the harvest moon waiting for its turn. If someone had written it for a movie, I’d have found it over the top. It really happened, and I was lucky enough to live it with my kids.
Our Six Flags Story Keeps Growing

Where: Six Flags Great Adventure, Jackson, New Jersey.
Season: select nights from September 18 through November 1, 2026. Check dates and hours on the park’s website.
Entertainment: Dead Man’s Party, Awakening, Blade Drummers, Unleashed and other seasonal offerings.
Rides: roller coasters and rides available at night.
Haunted Attractions Pass: the haunted mazes require this additional pass, along with park admission, a Season Pass or a membership.
Tip: tripods, monopods, selfie sticks and gimbals are not allowed inside the park or the haunted mazes. Leave them at home.
Is Fright Fest 2026 Worth Visiting?
For me, yes, and not for just one reason. It’s worth it for the atmosphere: the fog, the music, the scares that show up when you least expect them. It’s worth it for the mazes, which go from an asylum to a zombie casino, from a cabin in the woods to a witch’s mirrors. And above all, it’s worth it for what happens between one scare and the next: the laughter, the screaming, the debate over who got the most scared.
If you love Halloween, enjoy well-produced scares and want a night that feels like stepping into a movie, Fright Fest has a lot to offer. As for me, I already know I’m coming back.
